When we have open positions, we list them on this page. We welcome inquiries about joining the laboratory for research positions. However, we respond only to those that explain the specific interest in our laboratory (unlike "canned applications" that could be sent to any laboratory). Laboratory Manager
Applications are invited for a Laboratory Manager working in the laboratory of Matteo Carandini in the Department of Visual Neuroscience at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London. The laboratory employs a number of experimental techniques to probe vision and measure brain activity in biological preparations.
General responsibilities include: keeping the laboratory well organized, maintaining the flow of supplies, overseeing the maintenance of equipment, tracking the arrival of subjects, overseeing some vivarium procedures, organising data directories, maintaining a current Home Office Project Licence. Technical duties include: performing histology and arranging for genotyping, assisting with experiments, acquiring behavioural measurements of visual performance and making physiological measurements.
The successful applicant will hold a BSc in a biological or technical discipline with some laboratory experience. The ideal candidate will hold a Personal Licence from the Home Office, and will have experience working with biological preparations and ideally an MSc in a biological discipline. An ability to learn new procedures and techniques and perform them precisely is essential. The ability to write simple programs in a computer language such as Matlab would be beneficial. The ideal personality is one that enjoys ordering things that are disordered, and enjoys learning new skills and performing them accurately.
The appointment will be made at the level of Research Technician (grade 6). Salary is £25,777 to £30,234 per annum. Appointments will normally be made to the bottom point of this range. The position will be appointed for a project duration of two years in the first instance.
For a job description or to make enquiries about the application process please email at: hr.ioo@ucl.ac.uk (quoting reference 1213053). To apply for the position please fill out the online form. Deadline for applications is 21 November 2011.
Two postdoctoral fellows
Applications are invited for two postdoctoral scientists working in the joint group of Kenneth Harris and Matteo Carandini in London. The goals of the project are to study how information is processed by neuronal populations of the cerebral cortex and to establish neural correlates of perceptual behaviors.
Our group uses a multidisciplinary approach including advanced computational methods, massively parallel neuronal recordings, optogenetics, functional imaging (wide-field and two-photon), and sensory-driven behaviour in virtual environments.
We seek two highly motivated individuals to fill these posts. Our lab offers the opportunity to perform state-of-the-art experiments, but we would also be interested in candidates performing purely computational work.
Candidates with a background in the quantitative sciences (e.g. mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering), as well as the neurosciences, are encouraged to apply. The successful applicants will have a doctoral degree, good knowledge of neurobiology, strong skills in computer programming (experience with MATLAB preferred), and experience of writing scientific manuscripts.
The application form is online, with a deadline of September 11, 2011. If the previous link is dead, go to UCL jobs, click on "UCL job search engine" and enter Ref. No. 1199523.
Also, feel free to contact Kenneth or Matteo if you have any questions. It helps if your subject line says "2011 postdoc YOURNAME". We will respond to all inquiries that explain at least briefly the reasons for your specific interest in working with us.
